Construction projects need different specialist support at different stages. A quantity surveyor controls cost from the first estimate to the final account. Do I need a quantity surveyor or a project manager?

A quantity surveyor focuses on cost: estimates, cost plans, tender reports, valuations and the final account. A project manager focuses on leading the project: the team, programme, risk and decisions. Many projects benefit from both, and on smaller schemes one consultant can often cover both roles.

What does an Employer’s Agent do?

An Employer’s Agent acts for the client on a design and build contract, checking the contractor’s proposals, valuing work, managing change and protecting the client’s position on cost, quality and time.

When should I appoint a construction consultant?

As early as possible. Advice at the feasibility and briefing stages has the greatest influence on cost, programme and risk, and is far cheaper than fixing problems once work is on site.
